International Museum Day 2007

IMD 2007 is back again! This time it comes with a promise of 80 Activities in 24 Museums over 10 Days from 18 – 27 May 2007. Although it says International Museum Day but it comes packed with more than a week’s worth of activities. The actual date of IMD is really on 18 May every year and has been celebrated as such since 1977. This year, the theme of IMD is “Museums and Universal Heritage” and you can find out what the museums around the world are doing on this day.

In Singapore, the date simply kicks off a series of activities and lots of discounts and incentive to visit the multitudes of museums that you never knew existed in Singapore! To find the complete list of activities, refer to this list on the Singapore IMD07 website.

Being typical Singaporean, my favorites would include all the admission ticket offers to museums like the Museum of Shanghai Toys, the Red Dot Museum and the Malay Heritage Center. There are also all kinda of tours available from guided tours, walking tours to bus tours! There is of course the most recently reopened National Museum of Singapore which I know many of my friends are dying to visit. But did you know there are at least 42 museums in Singapore? That’s at least one museum to visit for each weekend for the next 1.5 years. Sad to say I’ve visited less than 10% of that and I’m sure there are people who do far worse than me. For poor students like myself, some museums offer 50% discount on admission on Friday evenings from 7-9pm such as the Asian Civilization Museum. The Singapore Art Museum even offer free admission on Fridays 6.00pm – 9.00pm and Weekdays lunch time (12noon-2pm), not forgetting “Open House Days” like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, National Day, Deepavali, Christmas and OF COURSE, the International Museum Day. There are of course also museums that don’t even charge admission like the NUS Museum, the NUS Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research and the Civil Defense Heritage Gallery that is located inside the oldest fire station in Singapore behind Funan Centre.

If you’re keen on more fast pace action rather than walking around a stuffy museum, there is going to be an “Amazing Race” styled Heritage C-Race where you get to explore an actual battle site and the site of the British surrender. Just form teams of 5 on May 26 2007 from 9am-5pm. Call 6332 7973 to register and it’s $5 for registration.

In the upcoming days counting down to IMD 2007, I’ll share some photos of my favorite museums in Singapore like the Hua Song museum in Haw Par Villa which is a treasure in its own right. Tym also wrote about a visit to the Singapore Art Museum previously. But if you’re interested, you can always visit yesterday.sg where many others have already shared their takes on museum and heritage in Singapore.
